The History of Chesterfield

From Native American settlements and Spanish land grants to corporate headquarters and Downtown Chesterfield.

Pre-History Through Early Settlement. Human presence in what is now Chesterfield dates back thousands of years. A site in western Chesterfield contains Native American rock art dated to 4,000 years ago, and a Mississippian ceremonial and market site from around 1,000 A.D. has been identified within modern city limits. European settlement began in earnest in the early 1800s. The present-day city traces its identity to six original communities: Bellefontaine, Lake (originally "Hog Hollow"), Gumbo, Monarch, Bonhomme, and Chesterfield proper. Each had its own post office, general stores, and distinct character.

The Name Chesterfield. The name was given by Justus Post, a Vermont transplant who arrived in 1815, acquired over 21,000 acres, and laid out the original town in 1817. Post named his estate after Chesterfield, New Hampshire, near where he grew up. Though Post eventually moved to Illinois, his place name became the defining identity of the entire western St. Louis County region.

Modern Growth. The community's character shifted dramatically when the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific rail line came through the valley in the late 1870s, sparking new commercial development around Drew Station. By the mid-20th century, developer Louis Sachs launched Chesterfield Village in the 1960s, a 1,200 acre development combining condominiums, apartments, and office space around a planned regional shopping mall. This became the engine for the city's modern growth.

Incorporation. June 1, 1988. For most of the 20th century, Chesterfield existed as an unincorporated West County area under St. Louis County governance. As the population and commercial base grew, residents organized the Chesterfield Incorporation Study Committee, led by John A. Nuetzel, and spent years navigating legal hurdles and failed votes before finally prevailing. On June 1, 1988, the City of Chesterfield was officially incorporated and became, in the words of local historians, "West County's premier residential, business, retail, and transportation center."

The Great Flood of 1993. On July 30, 1993, the levee protecting Chesterfield Valley from the Missouri River failed, the first time since 1935. The entire valley, nicknamed "Gumbo Flats," was submerged. When the area was rebuilt with far stronger levees, the valley was transformed into the massive commercial corridor it is today: Chesterfield Commons, Premium Outlets, The District, and everything else that defines Chesterfield Valley.

A Scientific First. The Chesterfield Village Research Center was the birthplace of genetic modification as we know it. Scientists at this facility grew the world's first genetically modified organism, a potato, on June 2, 1987, marking one of the most consequential scientific events of the 20th century.
